Hi Billy. Have you heard of movie 'Beautiful Mind'. It is a true story of a Brilliant Mathematician called John Nash - who also suffers from Schizophrenia. Here is a Wiki Link:

This surely proves that the illness itself can effect all levels of intelligence equally. Schizophrenia does affect a person's ability to function within society - so many people with the illness - especially those who acquired the illness in their youth - will have missed the opportunities to become educated (which is ofter confused with intelligence). Having the illness does not, by itself, cause loss of intelligence - neither does the medications - but uncontrolled symptoms and poor medication management can seriously get in the way of a person being able to demonstrate their intelligence. I'm sure you know that the muppet who made the insensitive remark has no idea - Schizophrenia is nothing at all to do with 'split' or 'multiple' personalities. It is an illness which is poorly understood by Joe public - but the people in the specialist health services DO understand it and know what works best in keeping it under control. Good Luck.Does schizophrenia, or the tablets used to control it take away your intelligence?
Hi Billy
I know people who suffer from schizophrenia who are very intelligent, so I'm not sure that either actually take it away.
At points when they are suffering more than other times then they can become less able to cope, but the same can be said of any mental or physical illness, so again it's not uncommon.
Taking the correct medication actually seems to help the people I know, so I think the benefits far outweigh any side effects, but again, as with all medication, it can effect different people in different ways.

the information is easy to read and understand and may well prove useful to you.
Hope this helps.Does schizophrenia, or the tablets used to control it take away your intelligence?
Intelligence? probably not, but some might affect concentration, such as the medication Risperdal.
My dad suffers with this condition, i don't think it affects intelligence. What these drugs have done to my dad is make him loose his motivation he just wants to sleep and not much else. Its like his personality has gone and he is an empty shell. Not trying to scare you but this is just my experience maybe its not the same for everyone.
Know the symptoms and be aware of what's happening.
That way you're intelligent enough to know when you're being delusional.
It could be said that the medicine suppresses some of your mental energy ,but usually when your schitzo you've got too much mental energy and the doctors try to get it back in balance.
only from one of you.
I know somebody who uses them. He is still very creative to find things that no one can imagine ! He is absolutely brilliant.
