Because it is a rental unit you should check with your landlord. You are not authorized to have anyone do any major repairs to the unit without their approval. I have been in similiar situations and had to resort to keeping a window open. Hopefully your landlord will remedy the issue without any problems.





As far as a safety issue, it is a matter of things coming in contact with the hot surface of the unit. In addition to living things, make sure there are no combustible materials in the way like linens or curtains.

ask a local hardware store for a thermostatic valve,. it will bleed some steam pressure out and will reduce the amount of heat
If the radiator is over sized for the space, then you must insulate it so there is no heat emission for a portion of it. Fiberglass will be fine, and then the cover can go back on.
