How long after starting Birth Control will it be effective?

My doctor is starting me on the Pill in three days, and I'm just curious as to how long it takes for it to start working so I don't need a condom anymore? How long after starting Birth Control will it be effective?
If you are not starting it within 5 days of the beginning of your period then it will take a full month until after your next period to become effective. If you are starting it within those 5 days it is considered effective immediately. How long after starting Birth Control will it be effective?
It depends on a couple factors, one is the exact pill that they put you on. Some of them you have to wait 7 days, some you have to wait 14 days, and some are not effective until you start the second pack of pills. It is also important to start the pills the day after your period so that you will be fully protected. However many other factors can play into it, such as if you miss a pill, don't take the pill at the same time everyday, etc. Without the name of which pill they put you on there is no way to give you the information that you are seeking. Your best advice is to read the literature that came with the pills, post the name of the pill they gave you here, or to call your local Walgreens pharmacy and ask a pharmacist your questions.
i just started the pill too...my doc said wait a month but then when i got home and read the pack it said I would be protected straight away.

you have to start it the first day of your period otherwise u wont be protected for the month.

ask your doctor as every pill is different. Obviously the longer u r on it the more hormone builds up inside you, protecting you from pregnancy and the doc will say a month just to cover himself but most pills u r protected straight away.
It takes a month (one pack) to be established in your system and be fully protected. I didn't start it on the Sunday start because I was bleeding at the time (not a period). This is what my doctor had told me when I had to start them.

Some doctors suggest a week (if you do a Sunday start as directed in the packet), but the longer you wait, the safer it will be against pregnancy. Everyone is different.
