Dumpster Odor- What are some methods to control it?

On those warm sunny days, the dumpsters out here at my 50 bedroom apartment complex become quite ripe. The smell is bad enough to gag a maggot, technically speaking, even from far away.Dumpster Odor- What are some methods to control it?
Most dumpster odors occur because of the smell generated from decomposing food. This is simply fix, because the PH balance of the items are changing. You adjust this by adding what corrects most problems with ph....LIME...Remember in the old TV shows and moves, the bad guys cover a body with lime, before covering with the dirt? Try sprinkling with some regular garden lime. It should work.

Or, for a modern day fix, a company called Zep makes ZEP DUMPSTER FAIR. It a granular product that is also sprinkled in the dumpster. It and similar products can be found at your local janitorial supply company.Dumpster Odor- What are some methods to control it?
The odor problem is dependent on several factors-most of them out of your control. If you can get all of the dumpster users to contain all of their refuse in closed garbage bags you will solve a very large part of your problem. Hopefully your dumpster is emptied fairly often but, since this cuts into overhead, landlords/property managers tend to go as long as possible between dumps (usually weekly). Proper ventilation will also help to keep the interior of the dumpster dry and minimize the growth of odor causing mold, fungus, and bacteria. Unfortunately, leaving the lid on the dumpster open allows easier access to cats and rats; both of which will tear the bags that you and your neighbors worked so hard to seal up!

Would your property manager consider moving the dumpsters to a position which is mainly downwind from the apartments? Moving the dumpsters won't solve all of your problems but should help some. Finally, do all or most of your neighbors agree that the odor is a problem? Address a group letter to the landlord. Sometimes they really are unaware of a problem until someone makes a comment.

Good Luck!
2 to 3 gallons of regular house hold bleach will kill all that bacteria that causes the odors.Find out when the dumpster is emptied, and right after that pour your bleach into it along the inside of the four sides, and just let it trickle down to the bottom
Wash them down with vinegar The easy way to do it that use a hose in sprayer and set it to the highest setting. Be careful not to spray any vegetation cause the vinegar can kill grass and plants. Good Luck
