my pond holds 3000 litres of water it is 6 feet deep has u.v lamp and good filtration system can any one helpBlanket weed how can i stop/control it?
Blanket weed, the ponders worst nightmare!
The UV lights only control suspended algee, which in turn breakdown and become fertilizer for other algee.
To combat any algee (blanket weed) you need to treat the root cause, removing the nitrites(fertilizer).
The mechanical filtration systems remove the debris from the water (leaves, fish waste, etc).
Most incorporate a biological section which converts amonia of nitrites (produced by fish waste and decaying material) into nitrates (fertilizer).
The only way to remove these is to change you water on a regular frequent basis ( not practical or safe for your fish) or have more plants to use the nitrates. most experienced ponders use a smaller pond just after the filter return loaded with plants and slow water movement (veggie filter) to combat algee and make for a healthy pond.
Also some blanket weed is indeed benificial to the pond in that it is a more evolved plant than suspended algee and will assist in keeping the pond from turning ';pea soup';.Blanket weed how can i stop/control it?
I have manged to control this with straw and from memory oats these are sold at most garden centres also there are what are refered to as Algae Pads which kill of blanket weed.
I would be careful about using chemicals.

UV tubes have to be changed every 6 months for the `filter` to remain effective.
The only way is to physically remove it I'm afraid. Get one of those swizzle sticks (a long garden cane with a curled piece of bendy metal on the end) and swizzle it round the pond to remove it. Am pretty sure there is nothing you can treat your pond with for blanket weed - you'll have to get swizzling I'm afraid...!
UV sterilisers will only stop your water from going green, they won't do anything to eliviate the dredded blanket weed. You can't kill it either, all you can do is control it - and unfortunately nothing is guaranteed, although there are some products which do work well for a lot of people.
Electronic blanket weed killers tend to be a waste of time judging by feedback received from my customers but the 3 products on the go at the moment which seem to be very worthwhile are.
Evolution Aqua blanket weed inhibitor
Interpet Pond Balance
And there's a relatively new product from Cloverleaf which has rave reviews.
The Evolution Aqua product has worked wonders for many of my customers so on that basis I can recommend it to you.
The important thing is to continue to treat your pond even if the blanket weed has died back temporarily.
Hope you have success in getting rid of it.
It dose not mater if the U.V tubes are re newed the best way to get rid of blanket weed completely is by pulling it and also keep topping your pond up once a week with tap water the chlorine in the tap water helps control it.
You could try a blanket weed control unit, orblanket weed killer all made by pond pride.

Good luck.
