Good job doing your research. Heating pads are best for Leo's since they are ground dwellers. Simple answer: A thermostat is not necessary. Just get a thermometer...much cheaper than a thermostat. Just add or remove substrate (or paper towels if you are going that route) until you get the right temp on the warm side. It should be in the mid 90's. Cooler side should be in the mid 80's. Make sure to give a cooling off period at night....60's to low 70's. Enjoy your leo!How to use a heat pad and how to control it?
heat pads can be bad if not used properly i have a leopard gecko i do not use a heat pad but what you do is take the heat pad place it underneath the cage u want a little room under the cage so the heat pad does not over heat it needs at least a quarter inch i have never heard of hooking a heat pad to a thermostat you need a thermometer so you know how warm it is in the cage i don't use mine i got my gecko when she was very young all i use is a daytime lamp and a heat lamp geckos will adapt to their environment so if you want to control the heat pad unplug it when it gets too warm in there and if you are not sure go to like petco or petsmart or any pet store that sales leopard geckos and ask them they will be more than happy to assist you
u need either a on/off thermostat (aka mat stat) or a pulse proportional thermostat either will work fine. dimmer stats generally have a minimum wattage (usually about 30-60W) which is too high for most mats
